Travelling makes it tricky to eat as healthily as you normally would – especially with the vast array of junk food available at rest stops & airports! Being organized by bringing some of these simple, healthy snacks along with you will really help with the temptations. My thinking is that I would rather save those extra calories for the glass (es!) of wine or G&T’s waiting for me on arrival at my holiday destination!
# 1. Dried Mango
My favourite fruit but just easier to travel with it like this. Mangoes fight cancer, alkalize the body, aid in weight loss, regulate diabetes, help digestion, clean your skin, and make the perfect snack.
# 2. Macadamia Nuts & Cranberry Mix
I found this mix at Woolies & I absolutely love it. The combination of the salty macadamias & the sweet cranberries is so delicious. Macadamia nuts are packed with numerous health-benefiting nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins that are essential for optimum health and wellness.
# 3. Biltong
A fantastic source of protein - biltong is an ideal snack during the day between meals. It’s great for satisfying those hunger pangs, is low fat and low carb and just a small amount will keep you going until your next meal. Either sliced or the snapsticks – it's great for the whole family to enjoy, especially teething babies!
# 4. Blueberries
Low in calories, high in fibre, packed with antioxidants & essential vitamins – berries are one of the lowest GI fruits & therefore will keep you feeling satisfied for longer. Their sweet flavour also makes them a nutritious replacement for sugary foods in your diet which helps keep your sweet cravings at bay.
# 5. Bananas
Bananas are a potassium powerhouse, delivering energy to help keep you going on that long drive/flight. They could not be more convenient to enjoy, and they are a good source of both vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre.
# 6. Babybel Cheese
Tiny, tasty and so much fun to unwrap - is there anything not appealing about the idea of a baby-sized wheel of cheese? Also a great source of protein & calcium.
# 7. Trail Mix
Delicious & packed with all of the right things in the perfect amount. Raw cashew nuts, almonds, dried banana, coconut and cranberries.
# 8. Cucumber, Rosa Tomatoes & Carrots
Make your own mini-salad combo which is mess-free & very healthy.
# 9. White Nectarines
If you haven’t tasted these white flesh nectarines then you are seriously missing out! Sweet, juicy & totally delicious! Make sure you have wet wipes ready & waiting!
# 10. Chocolate Zucchini Bread
Make this bread before you travel, slice it up and wrap it in tinfoil. Recipe is up on my blog available here.
# 11. Water
Although this is not a snack, it is just a reminder to stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water. If you have little ones, try to avoid giving them fizzy drinks or fruit juice – both of which are loaded with sugar & completely unnecessary in order to quench thirst. Water is all you need.
